A Washington State motorcyclist was recently killed in a log truck accident in Grangeville, Idaho. The motorcyclist was at the intersection of U.S. 95 and Grangeville Main Street when the log truck accident occurred.
Frederic J. Smith, 69, of Anacortes, was at the intersection with a group of other motorcyclists around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24 when he made a fatal turn onto U.S. 95 South.
According to Idaho State Police, Nicholas R. Bendawald, 39, of Emmett, was driving northbound on U.S. 95 right by the intersection of Main Street/Highway 13. He was in a 1997 Kenworth tractor pulling behind him a loaded 2011 Lincoln trailer with heavy logs. Smith was riding a black and maroon 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle.
As the group of riders came to the intersection of U.S. 95 from the westbound lanes of Highway 13, one motorcyclist made the first turn, leaving Smith to be the next one to follow.
While Smith began pulling out to head southbound, Bendawald had no time to slow his vehicle and crashed into the rider.
An off-duty Meridian Fire Department deputy chief fire marshall just so happened to be in the area and was one of the first responders to the scene. He administered life-saving measures to Smith.
Smith was immediately transported to a nearby hospital and later flown to Lewiston. He succumbed to his injuries at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center.
Smith was wearing a helmet and Bendawald was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the log truck accident. The highway was blocked for nearly three hours due to the log truck accident.
