Despite being the smallest state in the nation, Rhode Island sees an unusually high number of traffic incidents each year throughout the state. Even with new traffic laws and road improvements, the most dangerous roads in Rhode Island are still some of the worst in the country.
Research shows that car accidents occur in Rhode Island at an increasingly higher rate than other places, despite having less than one million drivers living in the state. In fact, 2016 was the deadliest year in terms of traffic collisions in Rhode Island since 2007, according to the Property Casualty Insurance Association of America.
If you currently reside in the Ocean State or plan on taking a trip here, consider the following roadways and their risk factors to help guide you on a safer journey, provided by The Advocates personal injury law firm.
The 4 Most Dangerous Roads in Rhode Island
#4 I-95 Exit 14 and 15 in Warwick
For those who’ve traveled anywhere along Interstate 95, you’ll know just how similar it is throughout: filled with bumper-to-bumper traffic and fired up with aggravated drivers. From its southern end in Miami all the way up to the cold Canadian border in Maine, I-95 is one of the most dangerous roads in the country, and here’s why.
- Heavy traffic near Warwick
- Frequently traveled roadway
- High # accidents near Exit 14 & 15
- Icy during the winter months
- Aggressive drivers
This endless roadway makes its way through even the smallest of states, Rhode Island being one of them. Unfortunately, it brings just as much peril to drivers as it does to other, more populated states. Just between exits 14 and 15 in Warwick, there have been over 180 crashes, 50 injuries and one fatality.
#3 Route 44: The Great Nor’easter
Known as the northernmost major highway that stretches from east to west across the state, Route 44 has landed on our most dangerous roads in Rhode Island for several reasons. Aside from being a direct route to one of the most haunted highways in America, Route 44 needs some serious TLC.
- Needs roadwork
- Poor traffic flow
- Lack of medians in some areas
- 4 accident deaths between 2015-2017
RIDOT has made several improvements in trying to increase better traffic flow, but this hasn’t been enough to deter the number of accidents and traffic deaths this highway endures. If you’re heading on Route 44 to Connecticut or Massachusetts, remember to buckle up and watch out for oncoming traffic.
#2 I-95 Exit 18 in Providence
I-95 is perilous in any language, which is why we mention it twice on our list of most dangerous roads in Rhode Island. Where I-95 peels off Exit 18 into Providence, also known as Thurbers Avenue, is one of the worst driving areas in the state.
With nearly 296 crashes, 6 fatalities and 79 injuries during the summer months between 2015-2017, I-95 is undoubtedly an increasingly deadly highway for travelers. Numerous accidents, both minor and catastrophic, are reported almost daily on this short stretch of roadway. If you’re traveling into Providence from I-95, slow down and be mindful of other speeding drivers.
#1 I-295: Exit 6 in Johnston
Serving as a western bypass for the northeastern part of the state, Interstate 295, sometimes called the Providence Beltway, is an auxiliary Interstate Highway and the most dangerous road in Rhode Island. Despite its protective-looking belt looping the outskirts of Providence, this highway has had 179 crashes in the last few years and nearly 10 fatalities.
- Frequent construction zones
- High accident risk at Exit 6 in Johnston
- Slippery during winter
- Heavy snowfall
- High number of summer fatalities
While the winter months can obviously have their risks, summer months in New England are especially risky too. Teenagers are out for summer break and families are on the road to their annual trips to the coast. I-295 is a frequently traveled and increasingly dangerous roadway. If possible, use a different route and avoid the possibility of an accident.
